I completed my Ph.D. in 1999 at New York University in Cinema Studies.  My topic was "Passing, Lynching and Jim Crow: U.S. Visual Culture, 1895-1927," in which I wrote extensively about early film including Uncle Tom's Cabin, Birth of a Nation and the silent films of Oscar Micheaux.
